Knicks Cruise Past Bobcats;March Madness Upsets

The New York Knicks cruised past the Charlotte Bobcats Friday night at Madison Square Garden,111-102.The Knicks brought their record up to 45-26 on the season,having already clinched a spot in the NBA Playoffs,while the Bobcats fell to a dismal 17-55.
Leading the Knicks effort were J.R. Smith with his 37 points,2 rebounds,1 assist and 1 block;and Carmelo Anthony,who scored 32 points,along with 11 rebounds and 2 assists.The Bobcats were supported by Gerald Henderson,who notched 35 points,7 rebounds and 3 assists.
The crowd of 19,033 at the Garden also honored Knicks great Walt Frazier on his birthday before the game.MSG announcer Mike Breen and reporter Jill Martin presented Frazier,beaming in a desert camo suit,with his bobblehead doll likeness.
Upsets at the NCAA Basketball Tournament included the following:

3 Marquette 71,2 Miami 61
4 Syracuse 61,1 Indiana 50
15 Florida Gulf Coast University lost to 3 Florida 62-50 Friday night,ending their improbable advance up the bracket.

The experts are being proved wrong at the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament,which rivets sports fans' attention this time of year.Former NBA star and TBS commentator Charles Barkley says it is the most wide open NCAA Tournament he has ever seen.Friday's upsets:

A rare tornado hit Australia at Mulwala,New South Wales.The twister tossed large chunks of debris around.Only about 16 tornadoes a year occur in Australia,near the coastline.Southern Hemisphere tornadoes swirl in a clockwise direction,while Northern Hemisphere cyclones blow counterclockwise,The Weather Channel pointed out.

Frost Leads Toshiba Classic;Early Wildfire Scorches Colorado

South African David Frost shot an excellent,bogey-free eight under par 63 Friday to top the leader board at the Toshiba Classic at Newport Beach Country Club,California.Second in the Champions Tour event was the ever-popular Fred Couples,who has 15 career wins on the PGA Tour,with his seven under par 64.Couples appears in several TV commercials.
German Bernhard Langer,who currently leads the Charles Schwab Cup race after three events,made a strong comeback after firing off two eagles,one of them at the eighteenth hole,to bring himself within three strokes of the lead with a four under par 67.
I played well at the end of last year-solid golf,Langer said.Today was a continuation of that-plus I had a bit of luck here and there as well.I just tried to judge the distance right at the eighteenth.
Tom Watson finished the first round at one under par.
A small early season wildfire is scorching an area of difficult terrain near Fort Collins,Colorado.About 40 residents of the Buckhorn Canyon area,which is some 13 miles west of Horsetooth Reservoir,were evacuated from the 25 acre blaze in 50 mile an hour winds.No injuries were reported.
Meanwhile,another wildfire broke out near Peyton,northwest of Colorado Springs.Residents there were advised to evacuate as well,but the fire was 75% contained,the Colorado Springs Gazette said.
Arizona officials are concerned that the cold,wet winter has resulted in overgrown grasses that will ignite in the hot,dry summer ahead.There could be a bad fire season from April-June,The Weather Channel reported.

Tiger Woods Tops Cadillac Championship;Mexico Beats Team USA

Tiger Woods shot a superb second round 13 under par 65 to take the lead of the WGC Cadillac Championship at TPC Blue Monster at Doral in Miami,Florida Friday.Woods scored eight birdies and only one bogey on the dry,rapid greens.
Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell carded a very good 11 under par 67 for second place,while Phil Mickelson and Steve Stricker shared third with their good 10 under par 67s.
At the World Baseball Classic in Phoenix,Arizona,Mexico beat the USA 5-2 on strong pitching and Adrian Gonzalez's third inning two run homer.Team USA was out-hit by just one hit,9-8,but couldn't put their hits together.
Winning pitcher for Mexico was Yovani Gallardo,while loser for Team USA was 2012 Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey.The save went to Sergio Romo.
Team USA,0-1,must beat 2-0 Italy tomorrow night or face elimination,while 1-1 Mexico has a chance to eliminate 0-1 Canada tomorrow afternoon.
The WBC is only being televised on MLB-TV.This is limiting media coverage of the event somewhat,since relatively few Americans get the cable channel.It is the only fully international professional level baseball tournament,since baseball was scratched from the Summer Olympics.
Update:Team USA defeated Italy 5-2 in Phoenix Saturday night on a David Wright grand slam in the top of the 5th.They face Canada in an elimination game Sunday afternoon.The winner goes on to the second round in Miami.

Knicks Outlast Wizards;McIlroy Quits Tournament

The New York Knicks won their third straight game Friday night at Verizon Center in Washington,soldiering  past the Wizards 96-88.At the same time,the Brooklyn Nets lost to the Dallas Mavericks 98-90,giving the Knicks a third game up on them in the Atlantic Division of the NBA's Eastern Conference.
Carmelo Anthony powered the Knicks ahead with his 30 points,6 rebounds and 3 assists.As well,he was the workhorse of the game,turning in 43 minutes of play.For the Wizards,Bradley Beal achieved a career high 29 points,11 rebounds and 2 assists,playing 39 minutes.
A crowd of 20,308 saw the Knicks bring their record up to 35-20,14-12 away,while the Wizards slumped to 18-39,13-17 at home.It was the penultimate game of the teams' four game season series.
Raymond Felton added 23 points,6 rebounds and 4 assists for the Knicks,and John Wall chipped in 16 points,3 rebounds and 6 assists to the Wizards' effort.
A PGA Tour rookie,American Luke Guthrie,23,shot an excellent second round nine under par 63 to lead the field at The Honda Classic at PGA National Champion Course in Palm Beach Garden,Florida on Friday.Fellow American Michael Thompson was second with an eight under par 65,while Boo Weekley and Canada's Graham Delaet shared third at seven under.
World number one Rory McIlroy generated controversy by quitting when his score reached seven over par and he was heading for missing the cut,saying I'm in a bad place mentally.His official excuse was wisdom tooth pain.
It's unfortunate,said his playing partner Ernie Els.I'm a great fan of Rory's,but I don't think that was the right thing to do.He's feeling terrible about it,I know he is.That's the last thing he wants to do is walk off.
It would have been McIlroy's second missed cut of the year,having also failed to make the grade at his season opener in Dubai.
