This week we hear British singer-songwriter Charli XCX in "Boom Clap,"a song from the soundtrack of the film "The Fault In Our Stars."Charli is 22 and is of Scottish-Indian descent. Her new album "Suckers" is coming out on 15 December. It is her second major label LP,and her third album overall.
She was born Charlotte Emma Aitchison in Cambridge,England and was raised in Bishop's Stortford,East Hertfordshire.Besides writing her solo compositions, she has co-written hit songs such as "Fancy" with the Australian artist Iggy Azalea and "I Love It" with the Swedish duo Icona.*
While Charli XCX is enjoying great success, the New York Knicks are not.By losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers 90-87 Thursday night at Madison Square Garden, they dropped their record to 4-17,the worst start ever in the team's history.
Kyrie Irving posted a strong 37 points for the Cavs;while Tim Hardaway Jr. led the Knicks with his 20 points.Superstar Carmelo Anthony, apparently still cold from an injury, only shot 9 points for the Knicks;but his teammate Amare Stoudemire had a good game, scoring 18.And although Jose Calderon notched a tres at the last buzzer,it didn't reach the net in time, and the Knicks fell to their sixth straight loss.

Suns Surpass Pelicans;Knicks Lose Again;McCartney in Moscow
The big scorers were out Friday night in the NBA.For the Golden State Warriors,Stephen Curry posted a huge 52 as they manhandled the New York Knicks 123-103 at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks are now five and a half games out of the final playoff spot.*
It's definitely frustrating, how we're losing the games,Knicks star Carmelo Anthony said. It's time we should have it down pat right now.We should have it.*
Meanwhile, the Phoenix Suns' Goran Dragic scored a career high 40 points in their conquest of the New Orleans Pelicans 116-104 in the Arizona desert city.Anthony Davis scored 32 for the losers.*
Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy was shining in the Honda Classic Friday. The former World Number One was looking like his old self with his second round 11 under par 66 at PGA National in Florida. He had shot a 63 in Thursday's opening round.
Brendon de Jonge of Zimbabwe is in second place at -10.Tiger Woods was thankful just made the cut on the tough course with his even par,but Phil Mickelson goes home for the weekend, missing the cut at 1 over par.*
I found some good music this week in the jazzy "Rio" by Duran Duran, now digitally remastered;and Sir Paul McCartney with his exceptional live performance of "Back In The USSR" in Russia itself, complete with dancing girls.Russia's been making the big news lately with the Sochi Olympics and the situation in Ukraine."Well, the Ukraine girls really knock me out. They leave the West behind. And Moscow girls make me sing and shout. And Georgia's always on my mind."(Lennon-McCartney)

In the Zone:Carmelo Anthony;Music;More North Wind
It was a career night for Carmelo Anthony and a welcome break from losing as the New York Knicks creamed the Charlotte Bobcats 125-96 Friday Night at Madison Square Garden.Anthony broke the Knicks' five game losing streak and their old scoring record with his 62 points.Bernard King held the old record of 60,which he scored on Christmas Day 1984.King said he was absolutely delighted it was Anthony who broke his longtime record.
It was also a scoring record for the present day Madison Square Garden, which opened in 1968.Kobe Bryant held the old record of 61 points;while Wilt Chamberlain scored 73 points at the old Garden in November 1962 for the San Francisco Warriors, who have since moved to Oakland.*
Other Knicks contributed to the win, including J.R. Smith with his 14 points and Tyson Chandler with 6 rebounds, but they consciously focused the game on Anthony when they realised a record was in the making. Before the game, they had showed him a motivational video by his personal hero, boxing legend Muhammad Ali.It was a night of fun for the Knicks, bringing their season record to 16-27.They held onto third place in the Atlantic Division.
Al Jefferson led the Bobcats with 25 points and 9 rebounds.*
The barnbuster winter of 2014 brought glazed roads to East Texas and Louisiana Friday, freezing bridges and overpasses in unaccustomed Houston and San Antonio, and causing road wrecks. The dipping jet stream will continue sending frigid Canadian air down into much of the country in the new week, making natural gas prices uncomfortably high. This blog has shortened morning walks in the stubborn wind.*
This week's videos of "Lucky Star" and "The Last Time" balance Madonna and The Rolling Stones in their young tracks, the masculine with the feminine. She is the slinkiest singer in that take, let me tell you.The Stones were building their early success in the British Isles, founding what was to come worldwide.

Paramore's Hayley Williams;Canada's New Tennis Star
This week I have posted a live performance of "Misery Business" by Paramore and Shakira's new single "Can't Remember To Forget You" featuring Rihanna. The Shakira song is from her new album, which is slated for a March 25 release.A video of the song is forthcoming shortly.
Paramore has been touring in Australia recently.Singer/songwriter Hayley Williams, along with guitarist Taylor York and bass player Jeremy Davis, comprise the group.Williams,25,is a native of the Deep South.Born in Meridian,Mississippi, she moved to Franklin,Tennessee when her parents divorced in 2002 and still lives there.A precocious talent,by age 14 she was co-writing pop songs in Nashville.
Williams was soon signed by Atlantic Records and insisted on being part of an alternative rock group, not a solo pop artist as Atlantic wanted. The label changed its mind and Paramore was formed.Their first album was released in 2005 on Atlantic's niche label Fueled by Ramen when Williams was 16.Three more have followed, the latest being "Paramore."
In 2010,Williams reached the Top 10,being featured with rapper B.o.B. in his song "Airplane,"which went to number one in the UK and New Zealand. The eldest of three sisters, she is a Christian.
Williams seems to prefer making funny faces when she is photographed. It is rather hard to find recent straight-faced photos of her.She has more than four million Facebook likes.*
The Australian Open is well underway in Melbourne, and Canada's Eugenie Bouchard,19,is all the rage there. An attractive blonde, she has a boisterous male fan club attired in appropriate t-shirts,singing and chanting loudly at her matches. The Montrealer has reached the fourth round, the farthest she has ever gotten in a Grand Slam tournament.
Another glam girl,Maria Sharapova of Russia, has also advanced to the fourth round.*
The New York Knicks did not advance their cause, being blown out by the first place Los Angeles Clippers 109-95 Friday night.Carmelo Anthony did achieve a team milestone with his 26 points and season-high 20 rebounds. He is the first Knick since 2010 to score 25 points and 20 rebounds.

SoCal Wildfire Singes Ventura;NBA Semis Set
More than a thousand firefighters have been battling a Southern California wildfire since Thursday morning. The Springs Fire began near Camarillo in Ventura County and swept down through the Santa Monica Mountains to the Pacific Coast Highway just Northwest of Los Angeles. As of Friday night, the blaze had consumed 28 square miles and was 20% contained.
Fifteen residences and five commercial properties had been damaged by the fire as of Friday morning, but no injuries were reported.Cal State Channel Islands had been evacuated, and the University said it would probably remain closed till Sunday evening.A portion of Point Mugu Naval Base was also evacuated. The Sycamore Canyon area along the PCH was evacuated as well.
The fire was being swept along by the infamous Santa Ana winds through the hot and dry scrubby terrain, difficult of access for firefighters with its scarce roads and lack of water sources. The weather is predicted to improve Saturday, with cooler and more humid conditions making the firefighting easier.
The conference semifinals of the NBA playoffs are now set, with the New York Knicks to take on the Indiana Pacers on Sunday, while the Oklahoma City Thunder play the Memphis Grizzlies;the Chicago Bulls will meet the Miami Heat;and the Golden State Warriors face the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks managed to survive a late Boston Celtics rally Friday night at Madison Square Garden, bumping the Celtics out of contention by a score of 88-80.
At the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte,North Carolina,Phil Mickelson's incredible putting sent him to the top of the leader board with his nine under par 67 in second round action Friday.Mickelson sank a 40 foot putt,as well as two 15 footers, and scored back to back birdies. He didn't miss any putts within 10 feet.
Others in contention at the Quail Hollow Golf Club include Australian Scott Gardiner at -7;Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy;and England's Lee Westwood ,both at -6.
Mickelson and Nick Watney finished the third round Saturday tied for first at -8 after play became extremely choppy in abnormally cool weather, with many shots veering into the spectators.

A PGA Tour rookie,American Luke Guthrie,23,shot an excellent second round nine under par 63 to lead the field at The Honda Classic at PGA National Champion Course in Palm Beach Garden,Florida on Friday.Fellow American Michael Thompson was second with an eight under par 65,while Boo Weekley and Canada's Graham Delaet shared third at seven under.
World number one Rory McIlroy generated controversy by quitting when his score reached seven over par and he was heading for missing the cut, saying I'm in a bad place mentally. His official excuse was wisdom tooth pain.
It's unfortunate, said his playing partner Ernie Els.I'm a great fan of Rory's,but I don't think that was the right thing to do.He's feeling terrible about it,I know he is.That's the last thing he wants to do is walk off.
It would have been McIlroy's second missed cut of the year, having also failed to make the grade at his season opener in Dubai.

NBA Special:Knicks Drubbed By Bulls Before London Trip
At Madison Square Garden on Friday night, the New York Knicks lost for the third straight time in games with the Chicago Bulls this season,108-101.The Bulls were led by Luol Deng and his season high 33 points.
Carmelo Anthony's impressive second half and 39 points couldn't save the injury-riddled Knicks, who staged a fourth period rally that was stopped by a Marcus Bellinelli deflection.Anthony was greeted with cheers of "MVP" by the fans at MSG.
The Knicks are missing Raymond Felton,Marcus Canby and Rasheed Wallace,as evidenced by their falling to a 23-13 record with Friday's loss;the Bulls moved up to a 20-14 record.
The Knicks will take on the Detroit Pistons on Thursday,January 17 in the third NBA game in history to be played in the UK.The game,a Pistons hoe game, will take place at O2 Arena,London.Presented by Adidas, it will be broadcast by Sky Sports. The sold-out event will be available live in 3D and on mobile, online and tablet via Sky Go.
Following the Thursday game,NBA games will be televised by Sky Sports for the rest of the regular season on Sunday nights, with double headers on most weekends;then live NBA Playoff games, the entire Eastern Conference Finals;and every game of the NBA Finals in June.
A warm front moved into the US east coast Friday with rain and fog,but will be short-lived as cold air and possibly snow returns to the picture for next week.

Grizzlies Replace Knicks;Air Force Earns Bowl
A spate of late games delayed publication tonight. At FedEx Forum in Memphis, the Memphis Grizzlies knocked the New York Knicks out of top position in the NBA and seized it for themselves with their 105-95 victory.Down by 21 points in the fourth period, the Knicks reduced that gulf to eight points, but couldn't close the deal.Shooting was lackluster by the Knicks, who had come into the game with a 6-0 record.
Leading the Knicks was Raymond Felton with his 18 points and 3 rebounds;Zack Randolph notched 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Grizzlies. At 7-1,the Grizzlies have a 4-0 record at home. The Knicks continue to top their Atlantic Division, with the Brooklyn Nets being second at 4-2.
In college football,Air Force dominated Hawaii 21-7 at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, earning bowl eligibility for a school record 6th straight season. The Falcons scored all their points on the ground;indeed, they didn't throw one pass the entire game.Cody Goetz ran for one touchdown, while Wes Cobb added two more.
Goetz says he is mocked for his diminutive stature by opponents, but they shut up when he runs the football into the end zone.He is able to hurtle over them.
Air Force held Hawaii to zero first down conversions in the second half. They are expected to play in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl on December 29 in Fort Worth,Texas.

Knicks Stay On Top;Sandy Suffering Continues
The New York Knicks continued their outstanding start to the new NBA season Friday night, topping the Dallas Mavericks 104-94.The Knicks are now 4-0,and are the only unbeaten team in the NBA.It is their best start since 1993-94,when they went on a 7-0 run to begin a road to the NBA finals.
Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 31 points and 7 rebounds. For the Mavs,OJ Mayo contributed 23 points.
Let's pause to remember the suffering that still goes on in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Our thoughts, prayers and other support are needed in the New York/New Jersey area, where many thousands continue to lack lights, heat and easy access to food and medicine. Some are stuck on the upper floors of high rises. They rely on the American Red Cross and other helpers.

Knicks Lose;Market Logs Modest Gain
Jeremy Lin could not get his team to victory Friday night as the New York Knicks lost to the New Orleans Hornets at Madison Square Garden. The 89-85 loss breaks a 7-game winning streak that saw the celebrated point guard emerge from media obscurity. The full glare of the spotlight will be on Lin Sunday as the Knicks play on national television. The game will be carried by ABC beginning at 1 pm Eastern.
Commentator and NBA legend Magic Johnson was critical of Lin's performance. He's got to get a better understanding of the point guard position,Johnson feels. You've got to turn to Amare Stoudemire, who scored 26 points on the night along with Lin.Lin's job is how to win tonight, turning the ball over to Carmelo Anthony and Stoudemire. He must not get caught up in the hype. This was great for Jeremy Lin tonight. It's not all gonna be well.I just want him to go back and watch the films and get better for Sunday,Johnson counseled.
Lin turned the ball over to the Hornets nine times-the worst in his career.
The market did well this week, adding a modest 1.38%,or 8.24 on the year.Positive manufacturing reports from the Empire State and Philly Fed led the way,and hope for a Greek debt deal also assisted.
Next week will be conditioned by the Greek outcome,as well as earnings reprts from Wal-Mart,Home Depot and Hewlett-Packard.In additon, home sales and consumer sentiment numbers will be released.
The S&P futures added 4.89 ahead of the long Presidents' Day weekend, and bond index futures declined.

Knicks Win,Electric Lin
The New York Knicks' Jeremy Lin was described by his coach Mike D'Antoni as being just an unbelievable point guard, and he certainly justified that description Friday night as he led the Knicks to a 92-85 win over the Los Angeles Lakers at Madison Square Garden. The amazing rookie scored a career high 38 points.
A product of Harvard University, the Asian American said I'm just gonna thank my teammates. It's fun just to play basketball with these guys.I'm just thankful to God.This is my dream.
Surrounded by the media, lionized by fans chanting "MVP" and even congratulated by Lakers players after the game,it could scarcely get more intense for the young man,who has four consecutive 20+ point games to his name, all of them Knicks victories.
The stock market, haunted by Greek troubles and a decline in consumer confidence, did not fare as well. All three major averages declined slightly on the week, with the S&P 500 Index stepping down 0.17%.For the year, the S&P remains in the green,up 6.76.The CBOE VIX Volatility Index climbed 21.58 on the week, signaling a resurgence of fear among the traders.
Next week, the market will deal with a number of reports, including the Empire State and Philly Fed manufacturing readings,as well as the Leading Economic Indicators and retail sales.General Motors,HJ Heinz and Campbell Soup will issue earnings figures.
The S&P futures lost 7.70 Friday evening, while bond index futures gained.

Celtics Continue Streak;Economy Looking Strong
The Boston Celtics won their third game in a row Friday night at TD Garden in Boston, edging past the New York Knicks 91-89.Ray Allen put Boston ahead with a three-pointer in the 4th period, followed by another three and a two.
The Celtics defense stopped the Knicks in the second half. Our defense is keeping us around the game,Boston coach Doc Rivers told his team.Your energy is good.
The Celtics have won seven of their last eight games.Carmelo Anthony has returned to the court for the Knicks, but his 26 points on the night weren't enough to overcome the Boston defense in the second half.
The Denver area is overcoming something most of the rest of the country hasn't seen much of this winter: heavy snow.Denver itself reports 13 inches of accumulation, but the foothills of the Rockies west of the city got up to four feet,or just over one meter of snow.
The market had a smooth journey on Friday when the unemployment rate dropped to 8.3% for January-its lowest level since February 2009,and the economy added a better than expected 243,000 jobs. The Institute for Supply Management also reported bigger than predicted growth in both the manufacturing and service sectors for January. For the week, the S&P 500 Index rose 2.17%,yielding a gain of 6.94 on the year.
Next week, earnings season continues with data coming in from Disney,Coca-Cola,PepsiCo,Visa and Time Warner Communications.Consumer sentiment will be reported on Friday.
The S&P futures climbed another 16.40 Friday evening, while bond index futures dropped.

Heat Hot;Market Cool
The Miami Heat overpowered the New York Knicks 99-89 Friday night at American Airlines Arena in Miami, bringing their record up to 14-5.After missing six games with a bad ankle,Dwayne Wade returned to the court for Miami. The story here is Dwayne Wade, said commentator and NBA great Magic Johnson. He makes everybody on the Heat team that much better.Wade scored 28 points on the night.
New York's Billy Walker was outstanding from a distance, shooting a career high seven three-pointers,ending up with a total of 21 points. As a team, the Knicks hit a remarkable 18 threes on the evening. They did little else well, however, missing their star Carmelo Anthony, who was sidelined with wrist and thumb injuries.
The market was nondescript this week, with the broadly based S&P 500 Index basically flat with a tiny weekly gain of 0.07%.Several mixed earnings reports were received from the likes of Ford,3M and AT&T,and GDP growth was a disappointing 2.8,missing the estimate of 3.0 for Q4 2011.So far this earnings season, only 59% of reports have exceeded estimates, which is below average.
Next week, earnings from Exxon Mobil,Pfizer,Qualcomm and Sony are on the calendar,as well as the important monthly readings from the Institute for Supply Management and the January employment report. The sports scene will be in the grip of pre-Super Bowl excitement as the New York Giants and New England Patriots complete their preparations for the mega American football game.

Big GE Week,Knicks Cuffed
It was a big week for GE as the manufacturing titan reported a great Q4.GE had a big jump in orders and its first revenue increase in two years. It's a sign of rising capital expenditure and a recovering industrial base as companies purchase GE's broad range of big products.
The New York Knicks had a small Friday night in San Antonio as the Spurs dealt them a 101-92 loss at AT&T Center. The Spurs have the best record in the NBA at 37-6.Tony Parker shot 21 points with 13 assists for the victors on a pleasant Texas night. It was the Spurs' eighth straight win.For the Knicks,Danielo Gallinari shot 16 points, while Amare Stoudemire had 23 points and Raymond Felton 18,respectively.
The Mid-Atlantic region was partly cloudy and chilled into the teens or single digits Friday night, with Saturday night expected to fall likewise.
For the week, the Dow rose 84.46,while the S&P dropped 9.89 and the NASDAQ stumbled 65.76,or 2.4%.The S&P futures pointed up 3.50 Friday evening, and the 10 year bond futures yield rose as well.Next week,Caterpillar and American Express will report their earnings.
