So this carol was either collected in,or inspired by,Appalachia by the late American collector and composer John Jacob Niles (1892-1980).This blog can't yet find what exactly the case is with this carol.He did both activities.He was quite a unique and influential figure in American folk music.He was classically trained,so he could read and write music.He also wrote the lyrics to "I wonder As I Wander",basing the carol on a melody he heard in Appalachia.The haunting quality of this additional carol's melody is typical of Appalachia.
