Nektaria Karantzi,37,was born in the former Byzantine Empire territory of Asia Minor, which is now a part of Turkey. She began her music career as a Greek Orthodox Church choir member, when she was still a child. She was at that time introduced to the monk Elder Porphyrios the Kapsokalyvite, who encouraged her studies of the Byzantine church music. After his death,Elder Porphyrios was canonised (proclaimed to be an Orthodox Christian saint).
Nektaria attended a music conservatory and eventually enrolled in the University of Athens, taking degrees in music and law and specialising in criminal law;but also studied the canon law (church law). She has been an editor of a legal publication and associated with some prominent Greek law firms. So there's a lot to this woman who loves both medieval ecclesiastical and traditional Greek music, having studied with that master of Greek traditional music,Chronidis Aidonidis, with whom she performs in one of tonight's videos.
Nektaria performs widely in Europe, gives master classes as far afield as the United States, and has recorded several albums of church and traditional music.

Is Tiger Woods Back in Top Form? -plus about Abeer Nehme
It was a different Tiger Woods in action at the Wyndham Championship today in Greensboro,North Carolina than we have seen the past few years.Uplifted by the supportive crowd,Woods, who is 39,shot an 11 under par 65 to tie for the lead with an unknown,Tom Hoge,26,and looked to have a good chance at his first win since the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in 2013.Indeed,Woods must win or possibly finish second to go on to the first of the PGA Playoffs next weekend.
Tiger Woods is second on the all-time PGA win list with his 79 career victories, behind only Sam Snead, who had 82.Woods has never played in the Wyndham before, but Snead won it an astonishing eight times.
It was a grind day,Woods said.I hung in there with my speed and it came out OK.The people here have been just fantastic. The proximity of the players to the fans-it's a vey intimate atmosphere.
The greens are getting faster. We were all surprised on the first hole, right out of the gate.I came here to win it,and right now I'm in good shape.*
Tonight is featured another song from the Lebanese musicologist and singer Abeer Nehme-yes,she changed the English transliteration of her first name from "Abir" to "Abeer."Ms.Nehme,35,performs traditional Middle Eastern music;sacred music from the Syriac Orthodox,Syriac-Maronite and Byzantine traditions;ancient Syriac and Maronite chants, and even some opera and Western music. She has a Bachelor's degree in Oriental Singing and a Master's in Musicology from Universite Saint-Esprit de Kaslik in Mount Lebanon. She also has a diploma with high distinction in advanced traditional Arab music performance.
Abeer Nehme has performed at the Vatican, the Fes Festival 2013 of World Sacred Music in Morocco and the Festival Orientales in Paris. She won the 2007 Honor award from the Apostoliki Diakonia in Greece, and the 2010 Murex D'Or distinction award. She has also given master classes and appeared on The National Turkish Television as permanent guest and Leading Performer for one year on the cultural music programme "One Thousand and One Nights."

Special Movie Presentation:His Secret Family 2015 Lifetime
This blog is pleased to present its first full movie,"His Secret Family " starring Haylie Duff and David O'Connell.Haylie Duff is Hilary Duff's older sister, and was mentioned briefly in an earlier post.Upon watching the picture,Haylie's acting was found to be very good. The story itself was considered to be a fairly well-written suspense yarn.Really,it wasn't bad for a TV movie. It gets a *** out of 4 rating.Maybe the script is a bit of a stretch or a little flat at times, but it largely succeeded,in The Taylor Star-friday late post's view.
Once again,it's a pleasure to present this Lifetime movie event to you, dear readers.

The Latest on Hilary Duff;WGC-Bridgestone Invitational Golf
Tonight is featured the third in our series of Hilary Duff's songs from her new album "Breathe In,Breathe Out."It is "Tatoo."Indeed, she actually does have a set of small tattoos on her right arm, which were visible when she visited Universal Studios with her older sister Haylie on Thursday. They were there to do an interview for the entertainment magazine show "Extra."The sisters are both mothers and are promoting their project called Sisterhood of Motherhood Campaign, which encourages women to support one another during childbirth, not criticise each other over name selection or other matters.*
Earlier Thursday, the two appeared on KTLA's Morning Show.Hilary, dressed in a low cut thin white tee, black leather pants and black heels, was wearing her blonde hair in the same layered style we see in the videos.
There's been an eight year gap since his last LP,which has astonished her fans when they hear how good "Breathe In,Breathe Out" is.It's her first LP for RCA Records as well. The new album was exciting, she said.It was a whole learning process for me.I felt like I was doing it all over again as a new person. It was a little bit of a struggle, but it was a very big release.*
Released on 12 June 2015,the LP debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200 album chart.Hilary,27,was born in Houston,Texas and later moved to Hollywood with her mother and sister when the girls' talent seemed to require it.They both had been in a touring BalletMet production and local theatre, and would go on to appear in commercials and do modeling jobs in Hollywood,to the point of being homeschooled.Hilary's big break came at the Disney channel, where she starred in the number 1 TV series "Lizzie McGuire" and "The Lizzie McGuire Movie."
At the same time,Disney realised she could sing and steered her into the Disney recording studio as well, where she recorded a Christmas album. That experience led to a contract with Hollywood Records and her second album "Metamorphosis."It went to the top of the charts and has sold more than 5 million copies to date. Two more albums followed with varying degrees of success,as did more TV and film work such as the movies "Agent Cody Banks" and "Cheaper by the Dozen."
From 2010 to 2013,she wrote a trilogy of young adult novels starting with "Elixir,"which topped the New York Times bestseller list.
The darker side of stardom also befell her when she was stalked by a Russian immigrant, who got a sentence of 117 days in prison for his crime.
Hilary married the now-retired Canadian NHL player Mike Cromie in 2011 and they had a son,Luca,in 2012.She filed for divorce in February.
In 2015,she has starred in the TVLand channel series "Younger."How many other stars have risen to the top ranks of both cinema, books, music and television?*
At the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron,Ohio,American Jim Furyk topped the leader board at publication time with his second round eight under par 66.Shane Lowry of Ireland was in second and Bubba Watson of the USA was third.Players were hindered by the dry condition of the greens and the narrow fairways at the Firestone Country Club.World Number One Rory McIlroy is still recovering from a torn tendon, but will play in next week's PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler,Wisconsin.

Civil War Songs;Scottish Open Golf
Tonight are featured some songs with a Civil War theme:"Dixie" and a cover version of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."
"Dixie" is of uncertain authorship, but dates from the 1850s,before the Civil War,and became one of the most popular American songs of the nineteenth century.Indeed,it was a favourite of Abraham Lincoln, who used it for his campaign rallies.During the Civil War,it became the unofficial anthem of the Confederacy.A new set of lyrics with a military theme were written in the war period, but the sung version given here,by the 2nd South Carolina String Band, uses the original minstrel show lyrics of the prewar period. An instrumental version by the The Canadian Brass and Nexus is also offered.
The cover version of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is by American folk singer Joan Baez. Her high quality voice and perfect diction makes listening to it worthwhile.Last time was featured the original version by The Band.Given the current atmosphere in the United States, you have to wonder whether a radio station would dare to play such a song written from the Confederate perspective.Have no fear, dear readers:you can listen to the song on this blog. For that matter,"Dixie" has also been criticised for being racist, even though Lincoln himself loved it.Would a radio station dare to play that song today? This blog will so that you can decide for yourselves.
Will such songs as "Dixie" still be sung in the public schools where we sang them years ago?For that matter,we had Christmas parties at public schools.*
At the Scottish Open at the Gullane Golf Club in East Lothian,Scotland,Englishman Daniel Brooks topped the leader board with his excellent second round eleven under par 65.Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland,American Ryan Palmer and four others shared second place at eight under par.Phil Mickelson, who won the tournament in 2013,was well down the leader board in 48th place with his three under par 68,but will still get to play the weekend and have an outside chance to win.

Tonight will be featured part of Crosby,Stills,Nash&Young's performance at Woodstock in 1969.Unfortunately,Neil Young was not included in the Woodstock film at his request, because he strongly objected to the film on the grounds that he felt the cinematography would corrupt the experience-or something like that.In short,he didn't like the cameras being onstage;they could have used their zoom lenses,he told interviewer Howard Stern in October 2014.
Young did play with the band for part of the set,but was cropped out of the scene as per his wishes.*
Team USA is playing China in Ottawa tonight in the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015.It is the first World Cup rematch of the teams since 1999,when the USA defeated China to win the cup.The match will be broadcast on Fox beginning at 7:30 pm Eastern.

Golfer Jason Day Collapses at the US Open; The Band
Australian golfer Jason Day collapsed from a dizzy spell at the eighteenth hole, casting a pall on the second round of the US Open Championship at Chambers Bay in University Place,Washington on the Puget Sound.Day fell to the ground and was reached by medical personnel in about five minutes, who helped him get to his feet and complete his round with a two under par 70,in a good position for the two remaining rounds, should his health permit.
For the past month or so,Day has been complaining of intermittent vertigo, but a battery of medical tests revealed nothing out of the ordinary.Supported by medics on either side,Day was able to sign his scorecard to officially register his round, then retreated to his mobile home parked on site.Tiger Woods said he will call Day to see how he is.
As of time of publication,Americans Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth topped the leaderboard along with Henrik Stenson of Sweden at five under par.*
Tonight is featured another track by the Canadian-American group The Band,"Across The Great Divide." The Band originated as the backing group for American singer Ronnie Hawkins, who took his drummer Levon Helms with him up to Toronto from Arkansas because the pay was better there. He recruited Canadian musicians guitarist Robbie Robertson, organist Garth Hudson, bassist Richard Danko and pianist Richard Manuel. All of them played other instruments as well ranging from string bass to trombone.Eventually, the musicians tired of Hawkins and his restrictions,at the same time growing closer into an independent act, what with four of them being Canadians and all five having distinctive musical personalities.
Ironically, though most of the members were Canadians,The Band's music was often obsessed with Americana and American historical themes such as the Civil War and the Old West.
Before starting The Band, however, they were recruited again in 1964 to serve as Bob Dylan's backing band when they did some recording with Dylan's producer Bob Johnston in New York.In 1968,they released their first LP "Music From Big Pink" as The Band. The Band continued to work with Bob Dylan off and on,recording "The Basement Tapes" with him in 1967,which was illegally released as a bootleg recording and admired by college students. They also toured with him and backed him again on his "Planet Waves" album,in between their own projects. In 1976,lead guitarist and principal songwriter Robbie Robertson left The Band to pursue a solo career as recording artist, film score composer and music supervisor in Hollywood. He worked closely with his good friend the eminent director Martin Scorsese on several film projects.
Robertson, whose real name is Jaime Royal Robertson, will be 72 on 5 July.He is an aboriginal Canadian on his mother's side, who was a Mohawk from the Six Nations Reservation. He became increasingly involved with his aboriginal roots as time passed, absorbing aboriginal musical influences and culture.
Robertson purchased the rights to The Band's material from the other members and became the group's curator.
The other members of The Band continued on with new personnel until Richard Danko's death in 1999.Richard Manuel committed suicide in 1986;Rick Danko died of heart failure in 1999;and Levon Helms died of throat cancer in 2012.Hudson and Robertson remained active in their solo careers.

Reconnecting With Toto;Indianapolis 500
Tonight is featured the hit song "Africa" by Toto. The band originated in Van Nuys,California of the Greater Los Angeles area in the 1970s and had several top five hits, including our featured track. They are still touring and recording today, having released "Toto XIV" in March 2015.The new album received 4.5 out of 5 stars from stereoboard.com,the British ticket and music news website.Stereoboard described the LP as being masterful, with lyrics rooted in an angry post-9/11 world, where big issues are challenged and hope craved.
"Africa" reflects the band's interest in world music,as well as several other styles, including folk and jazz:
It's gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had*
The members of Toto started out as session musicians, backing the likes of Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher, among others. One of the original band members,Mike Porcaro, died of ALS on 15 March 2015.
The name "Toto" is derived from the Latin phrase "in toto," meaning "all-encompassing," reflecting the many recordings they worked on and styles they have played.*
Keyboardist Steve Porcaro co-wrote the hit song "Human Nature" with Michael Jackson. It was included on Jackson's "Thriller" LP.*

Staying In Touch with Crosby,Stills,Nash & Young
Crosby,Stills,Nash and Young were part of the wave of folk rock bands of the 1960s.Indeed,their members came out of earlier folk rock bands:David Crosby from The Byrds;Stephen Stills and Neil Young from Buffalo Springfield;and Graham Nash from The Hollies.Crosby and Stills are Americans;Nash is British;and Neil Young is from Ontario,Canada.Since 1969,they have performed together in various combinations, their strong personalities alternately clashing and blending.Neil Young has always had a vigorous solo career as well.*
They started out as the trio Crosby,Stills and Nash.Neil Young joined them at Woodstock and has been with them off and on since that epic music and arts festival. As of now,it is off after Young bitterly quarreled with Crosby, and the original trio has gone on tour without him.Young said that he loved them, nonetheless. The quartet last performed together in 2013 at the 27th Annual Bridge School Benefit.Their last studio album was "Looking Forward" (1999),which got good reviews. This was preceded by their first album "Deja Vu" (1970);the live LP "Four Way Street" (1971);and "American Dream" (1988).
In 2014,the band released a limited edition box set that was well-received,"CSNY 1974." It consists of 40 previously unreleased high quality live tracks from their iconic 1974 stadium tour.Besides well-known hits such as "Helpless" and "Teach Your Children," there are previously unreleased Neil Young songs "Traces," "Love Art Blues " and two others. These are all on six 180-gram 12" vinyl records in a laser-etched maple LP folio case. Also included are all the tracks on a Pure Audio Blu-Ray disc;digital download code for the tracks;a bonus DVD of the concerts;a coffee table size book of never before seen photos from the tour;and a 7x7 Nash Edition print of the front cover photo signed by Graham Nash and photographer Joel Bernstein. It is available from the CSNY website.*
As for the current tour,it has received high marks so far.Crosby,Stills and Nash performed strong new material in Milwaukee,Wisconsin as well as some old favourites;Crosby and Nash delivered on their classic harmonies;and Stills was spot on with his electric guitar, according to The Milwaukee Journal's Piet Levy. They played for two hours and ten minutes, accompanied by a five piece backing band. That's nothing new,as the late drummer Dallas Taylor and bassist Greg Reeves had played on "Deja Vu."
Tonight I am featuring "Country Girl" from their "Deja Vu" album and their apocalyptic song "Wooden Ships," a live recording from the Bill Graham memorial concert at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco in 1991.

Late Sixties Treasures From the Music Vaults
A number of historic Eric Clapton performances are featured in tonight's lineup."Badge" is from Cream's last album "Goodbye," but was written and performed by Eric Clapton and George Harrison,as well as Cream members Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker."Blind Faith" was a super group featuring Eric Clapton,Steve Winwood,Rick Grech and Ginger Baker that made only one album and performed only one concert, the Hyde Park,London concert excerpted here with "Presence of the Lord" written by Eric Clapton.Clapton plays again in "Tribute to Elmore" with Jimmy Page,a track from early in the two master guitarists' careers.
Perhaps most interesting of all is Clapton playing guitar with John Lennon,Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones on bass and Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience on drums.Calling themselves "The Dirty Mac," they played "Yer Blues," which is John Lennon's song from The Beatles' "White Album" for a segment of the Rolling Stones' ill-fated project "Rock And Roll Circus."The spectacle blended songs with circus performers from Sir Robert Fosset's Circus, but the Stones felt their own performance was bland and upstaged by The Who,so they shelved the show.A bootleg album of the songs was circulated, however, including "Yer Blues." The song was recorded on 11 December,1968 at InterTel video studio in Stonebridge House,Wembley,London.Glyn Johns and Jimmy Miller did the sound recording on Olympic Sound Studio's mobile studio. The video is by director Michael Lindsay-Hogg and cameraman Tony Richmond, who later worked on The Beatles' "Let It Be."
"The Dirty Mac" also played a blues jam and covered a few rock-n-roll classics,Buddy Holly's "Peggy Sue" and Elvis' "It's Now Or Never."
The entire "Rock And Roll Circus" footage, including "Yer Blues," was officially released in 1995.

Australian Grand Prix;George Harrison as Motor Sport Fan
It's appropriate to write about George Harrison and the Australian Grand Prix at one sitting, because the late musician was also a lifelong motor racing fan.As a child,he collected photos of race car drivers and their cars.Indeed,he attended the 1955 British Grand Prix at Aintree when he was 12.He saw the great drivers Juan Manuel Fangio and Sterling Moss there. In 1979,he attended the Adelaide Grand Prix in Australia, which was won by Ayrton Senna, with Alain Prost second and Damon Hill third.
It's a hobby for me.It's a change from the film or record business,George told Australia's Channel 9.*
The Australian Grand Prix is on Sunday at Albert Park,Melbourne. The first two Free Practice sessions were held Friday. The top three in the first session were Nico Rosberg of Germany (Mercedes),England's Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Valtteri Bottas of Finland (Williams).Australia's Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) finished in tenth, and his teammate Daniil Kvyat of Russia was eleventh.
In the second Free Practice,Rosberg and Hamilton were again first and second, but Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) of Germany was third fastest.Ricciardo sat the session out while his engine was being changed, but the Russian Kvyat got the sixth fastest time in the Red Bull Renault car.
Two-time Australian Grand Prix champion Fernando Alonso of Spain, who is with McClaren this year, will not be racing because of an injury.

Remembering Joe Cocker
This week is featured another video by the beloved British singer Joe Cocker, who died on 22 December 2014 in Crawford,Colorado. He was 70 years old.Born John Cocker in Sheffield,England,he started his career as a gas fitter at age 16,then took up touring in 1968,pleasing the fans with his trademark gravelly voice and intuitive grasp of songs that enabled him to bring out aspects of them that hadn't been heard before.
In 1970,Cocker starred in the documentary film "Mad Dogs&Englishmen."This week's selection "Feelin' Alright" is a film clip from that documentary. It was centered on one particular concert that took place at the Metropol in Berlin on 31 October.Indeed,Cocker would return to Berlin many years later and was there when the Berlin Wall was torn down. For that matter,he was also in New York on 9-11.
The documentary is named for the tour called "Mad Dogs&Englishmen,"referring to the large band he toured with at that time.Bandmembers included Leon Russell,Jim Gordon,Jim Keltner,Carl Radle,Bobby Keys and Rita Coolidge in the Space Choir of backing singers.
Besides The Beatles,Cocker admired musicians such as Ray Charles,Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.He has 97 soundtrack credits.
"Mad Dogs&Englishmen" has a rating from IMDb of 7.2 out of 10.
Joe Cocker is often recalled for his unforgettable performance of "A Little Help From My Friends" at Woodstock in 1969 with The Grease Band and his air guitar playing. He was the husband of Pam Baker.
We'll miss this gifted Englishman a lot.

Avril Lavigne Releases New Video;Jimenez Leads in Thailand Golf
It hasn't been easy for Avril Lavigne lately, the Canadian singer/songwriter who has been reaching the record charts for more than a decade now.In December 2014,she announced to her fans that she hasn't been feeling well and asked them for their prayers.A private person, she didn't specify the illness. On top of that, her marriage to fellow rock star Chad Kroeger is reportedly on the rocks.
In spite of this, the Ontario native has made a new Vevo music video for her single "Give You What You Like,"which is interspliced with footage from the Lifetime TV movie "Babysitter's Black Book,"about a group of young girls who turn their babysitting business into a prostitution ring to make more money.
Avril turned 30 last September. The recording artist, who is petite at 5'1" tall, also has a perfume called "Wild Rose" and a clothing line known as "Abbey Dawn."She is on her second marriage and just tweeted that she thinks it may be time for her to get a little doggie, now she has the time.*
In Huan Hin Thailand,51-year-old Miguel Angel Jimenez, the oldest man to ever win a tournament on the European tour,is in the lead after two rounds of the True Thailand Classic presented by Black Mountain.Jimenez, who won twice on the European Tour last season at the age of 50,started 2015 with a win on the Champions Tour.He shot an excellent 11 under par 66 today, including seven birdies and one bogey.
I'm very happy,Jimenez said.I am very disappointed to make bogey on the last, but overall I played very solid and made a lot of birdies.I have the flu and I'm very bunged up and slept terribly last night, but apart from that,I'm fine.*
Indeed,Jimenez made an eagle at the ninth hole in the first round. The tournament is being held at the Black Mountain Golf Club.

A Super Bowl of Controversy
Unlike past Super Bowls, this one has been dogged by the suspicion that one of the participants cheated on their way to the iconic sporting event, and also media frustration with one of the football players. We're a league of rules, said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell at a Friday afternoon news conference, and if there are rules about how to inflate the football,we're going to enforce those rules.Whether an advantage was gained by breaking that rule is immaterial;it's the integrity of the game, and we're going to enforce it.Mr.Goodell didn't answer a reporter's question as to whether the deflategate scandal would cast a shadow over this Super Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium, however. He did say that we want the truth. If there are violations of the rules,we take them seriously. As of yet, that has not been ascertained with regard to the New England Patriots possibly tampering with footballs in their playoff game with the Indianapolis Colts. The investigation is ongoing.
Responding to British reporters,he spoke enthusiastically about the prospects for the NFL in London.London has done not only everything that we expected;but more than we expected.Every event that we have there explodes with interest. We are expanding the number of games.Their passion is obvious. We don't know where it will go,but there's great potential in London for the NFL.*
Mr.Goodell expressed no sympathy for Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch, who had repeatedly refused to answer reporters' questions, responding with the statement "I'm only here so I won't get fined."All the other players and coaches did answer questions, and the fans want to here from them.It sounds as if a fine could be in Lynch's future regardless of his showing up at media events.*
Londoners and the city of London are practically begging for their own NFL franchise. There are NFL fans in Australia and Canada as well, plus in other countries such as Mexico.*
Although this Super Bowl is plagued by the doubts of fans and media alike, there is no doubt that NFL fans will still watch the game in droves and consume a lot of snack foods in the process. The footballs used in Sunday's game between the Patriots and Seattle Seahawks will be intensely scrutinised, there is so much at stake. It's a big winter holiday and commercial event in the United States, and a big business like the NFL has no choice but to mean business on its most important Sunday.

Astronomy Special:Voyager I Detects Third Shock Wave
Voyager I,which was launched in 1977,has experienced its third shock wave in deep space. This wave is the longest in duration-it started in February 2014 and continues to this day.The spacecraft is still making significant discoveries more than thirty-seven years after its launch, calling home every day.The waves are created when the Sun emits a coronal mass ejection and a cloud of magnetic plasma from its surface, which results in a pressure wave that hits the interstellar plasma where Voyager I is,causing ionised gas to resonate or vibrate like a bell.
Voyager I executed flybys of Jupiter and Saturn before heading for interstellar space, finally leaving the solar system in August 2012,a study published in Science magazine reckons. It left the heliosphere, the region of the solar wind.Voyager chief scientist Ed Stone confirmed this in September 2013.It will fly past distant comets in 30,000 years and near another star in 40,000 years, traveling now at more than 38,000 miles an hour.
According to Leonard Burlaga of NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center in Greenbelt,Maryland, this remarkable shock wave event raises questions that will stimulate new studies of the nature of shocks in the interstellar medium. Why has the third shock wave lasted so long? How fast is the wave moving? How broad a region does it cover? The first of Voyager I's shock waves was from October to November 2012;the second was from April to May 2013.
Voyager I's twin,Voyager II,was launched 16 days ahead of Voyager I on 20 August 1977;Voyager I followed on 5 September 1977.Each spacecraft weighs 722 kilograms.Voyager II will likely follow Voyager I out of the solar system in a few years-it had made a detour to fly by Uranus and Neptune, the only spacecraft ever to have visited these outer planets.
