Mikaela Shiffrin:American Teen is Alpine's New Star

Team USA won its second alpine skiing gold medal Friday as reigning World Champion Mikaela Shiffrin,18,beat two Austrians at their own game, the slalom.Shiffrin overcame a bobble when her left ski left the snow,a mark of a skier's strength and maturity,to win the slalom gold at the youngest age in Olympic history.Austria's Marlies Schild,32,whose 35 World Cup slalom victories are the most in history and is Shiffrin's idol, took the silver, and her compatriot Kathrin Zettel won the bronze, her first ever Olympic medal after years of effort.
The precocious American Shiffrin began competing in Europe at age 16,traveling with her mother.I want to get farther than anyone's ever gotten,Shiffrin said. She's been showing the aptitude and determination to do just that.*
In speedskating,Team USA had been shut out of the medals going into Friday, consternating team members and fans alike. This was remedied in the 5,000 meter short track relay, when Russia, led by anchor Victor Ahn,won the gold and the Americans with their anchor C.R.Celski hung on for silver,as China and the Netherlands fell to the wayside and Kazakhstan lagged behind.China ended up with the bronze.Still, the US won six short track medals at Vancouver 2010 and a total of 18 in Olympic history,so a sense of disappointment in their Sochi performance remains.*
The featured videos this week are both by Madonna:"Live To Tell" and "Like A Virgin."
"Live To Tell" unfolds to a height of drama seldom reached in a music video;while "Like A Virgin" takes us to Venice,a tribute to the Italian American Madonna's European roots.

Market Corrects Some More;Braves Over Brewers

The stock market continued to correct excessive enthusiasm as the S&P 500 Index fell 1.99% on the week.On the year, the S&P has gained 8.96%.Major concerns included a slight slowdown in China;a drop in consumer sentiment at home;and an uptick in worry over Spanish financial news.
Major League Baseball is well underway now.On Friday night, there were some high scoring contests, such as the Atlanta Braves beating the Milwaukee Brewers at Turner Field in Atlanta by a 10-8 margin. The Braves were led by catcher Brian McCann and his two home runs.In another big score game,Boston downed Tampa Bay 12-10 at the Fenway Park opener in Boston.
Next week will see a lot of economic data and major earnings reports crossing traders' desks.Among important considerations will be the Empire State and Philly Fed manufacturing reports;Leading Economic Indicators;existing home sales and retail sales;and earnings from Citigroup;General Electric;IBM;and McDonalds.

Market Loses Ground;Swedish Golfer Gains Some

The market again struggled with Euro debt worries and an inadequate U.S. employment report, posting a decline on the week. The Dow lost 2.03,while the NASDAQ dropped 1.86 and the S&P fell 2.48.Next week should see more of the same with a light data calendar and few major earnings reports.Among those who will report earnings next week are consumer-oriented General Motors,Macy's and Disney.
The market will be open on Friday,Veterans Day,but banks and the post office will be closed.Consumer sentiment data will be released on Friday.
The S&P futures continued the decline Friday evening, being down another 4.60,while bond index futures rose.
At the World Golf Championship-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, the European Tour continued its Race to Dubai, where the Tour will conclude on December 9.Through the fifth hole of the third round on Saturday, with Asian birds singing distinctively back in the trees along the steamy course,Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson cooly held the lead at fourteen under par for the tournament.Australia's Adam Scott and South African Louis Oosthuizen-pronounced "West hayzen"-were tied for second at -11.Pro golf will only have a one month holiday,as the 2012 PGA Tour starts in Hawaii on January 6.

Thunder Prevail,Market Even

The Oklahoma City Thunder handled the Boston Celtics 89-84 Friday night before a very loud crowd at TD Garden in Boston. The Thunder couldn't make a basket as the game wound down, missing their last 14 shots, but their foul shooting was sharp.Russell Westbrook, who led the Thunder with 31 points, said that OKC also defended like they did all last year, and so they closed down the game.Kevin Garnett scored 16 points for Boston.
Brisk conditions brace the Northern Plains like the OKC defense this weekend.Bismarck will be 21F Saturday, and Billings will have a high of 19,with snow in both locations,as well as in the Sierra Nevada range.Seattle could see snow Saturday night, and snow showers may brush the Northeast.
After falling off a cliff, the market managed to recover its equilibrium this week, closing on a flat note for the week, with the S&P up 0.04.Worries about European debt had resurfaced, and China took measures to cool off its economy, constraining any progress traders had hoped to achieve.
Positive manufacturing numbers from the Mid-Atlantic region helped the market end on an even keel.Hewlett Packard's earnings report after the closing bell on Monday is an early milestone for next week's action. The S&P futures were up 0.50 this evening, and bond futures were in the green as well.

Market Mirrors Frigid Weather

The stock market was as icy this week as the weather on the east coast and elsewhere. The S&P closed down 3.7% for the month, making it the worst month since last February. If the "January barometer" theory holds true this year,we're in trouble. It was the third straight down January.Tech and commodity stocks led the weakness, being sold into strength.Big cap tech rolled over as the dollar index rose 0.63%-the highest reading since last July. The inverse relationship between the dollar and stocks was in full force this week.It has characterized so much of recent months' market activity. The dollar is being seen as a haven in the face of global uncertainty regarding everything from the economies of southern Europe,to China's clampdown on lending,to anti-Wall Street rhetoric in Washington.Conversely, traders are booking profits from the stocks that have recovered so well to this point. They want to lock in their success while they can.The week froze out retail investors yet again. The S&P futures gave little comfort about next week, being down more than eight points tonight.

An Echo of March

The market gave an echo of the bad times of last March this week, the worst weekly decline since that bottom. It had been foreseen for months. No market can keep ascending without pause or correction.Yet that is just what people have been expecting of earnings. When their hyper-expectations weren't met this week, they sold off.Other problems were the fear of Paul Volcker-inspired regulatory reform, which is odd, since the former chairman of the Federal Reserve is widely admired on Wall Street. It must be admiration from a distance.China contributed to the decline as well, ordering banks to stop lending so much, which threatens to create bubbles.Corrections occur when a tipping point is reached. All the worries that had been hidden reach a critical mass and come tumbling out together. In the end,it's a helpful development.Only when reality is admitted to can a market resume its upward trajectory. There are things out there that can hurt us,and now we are conscious of them,we can resume our financial journey through earnings season.
