Simply Sports:From the NBA to Cricket

The NBA's very long season is winding its way to a conclusion as the San Antonio Spurs lead the Miami Heat 1 game-0 in the championship series. The second game is Sunday night at 8pm Eastern on ABC.
The media focus is on Heat superstar LeBron James, who disappointed many in the first game with a performance that was rather poor by his very high standards. He only scored 18 points-his lowest total in the 2013 NBA Playoffs. He did log 18 rebounds and 10 assists, however. Is he worn out?
In cricket,West Indies defeated Pakistan by a score of 172/8(40.04 ov) to 170/10(48 ov).On Saturday,Australia takes on England.
The College World Series is slogging through the Super Regional round of sixteen on the Road to Omaha. Two games were postponed for inclement weather Friday. The results that did come in:UCLA 5,Cal State Fullerton 3;Louisiana State 2,Oklahoma 0.A full slate of eight games will played Saturday.
At the FedEx St.Jude Classic in Memphis,Tennessee,American Harris English, who will be 24 in July, seized the leader board with his excellent 10 under par 64.English is a University of Georgia alumnus in his second year on the PGA Tour.He has three top ten finishes so far in 2013,including sixth at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and is 69th on the money list.

Tiger Woods in the Hunt;TS Isaac Getting Near

It was a sunny day at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale,New York as Tropical Storm Isaac drew closer to South Florida, darkening skies at Key West, the southernmost tip of the United States.Sergio Garcia of Spain and America's Nick Watney shared the lead of The Barclays, the first of the four PGA Tour Playoffs  for the FedEx Cup,at the difficult and classic public golf course, part of Bethpage State Park on Long Island.
Each of the park's five courses has a color for a name.Bethpage Black was designed in the 1930s and features numerous huge bunkers with amoeba shapes. The greens of the lengthy course were drying fast, making them firm and bouncy.Garcia and Watney managed the tough old course better than most, ending the second round at eight under par.Tiger Woods finished just three strokes back at -5.American Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland just made the cut with even par, eight strokes back.
Snoopy 1,the famous MetLife blimp, provided views of the eccentric bunkers, which reach an extreme at the eighteenth hole, flanking it with their surreal menace.Garcia was coming off last week's victory at the Wyndham Championship with a lot of momentum, while Watney had been having a nondescript season so far.
Down in Florida, tropical storm conditions are expected for Monday and Tuesday.Coastal bay flooding may be a threat on Tuesday and Wednesday, with hurricane conditions possible.A Tropical Storm Warning and a Hurricane Watch have been posted for South Florida. It was already raining heavily in Miami at an NFL preseason game between the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons beat the Dolphins 23-6.
TS Isaac is currently blowing at 70 mph, moving NW at 14 mph and will soon cross Haiti, then go back over open water before crossing Cuba.It could be a category 1 hurricane by Monday evening.Heavily affected areas could range from Mississippi to Georgia.Category 1 is the weakest hurricane. On the twentieth anniversary of mighty Hurricane Andrew,TS Isaac bears scant resemblance to the devastating hurricane.
Barclays(BCS),MetLife(MET)
Update:At Bethpage Black,Sergio Garcia took sole possession of the lead of The Barclays, finishing round 3 at ten under par.Nick Watney was in second place on the leader board at -8,while Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were in 10th place with their four under par.Mickelson had improved from his even par second round by shooting a fine 67 on Saturday.
Tropical Storm Isaac ravaged Haitian refugee camps, killing at least seven people, and shifted a bit westward.About 10,000 people in the Dominican Republic were dispaced when 724 homes were damaged. At last check,it was a 60 mph storm, moving NW at 17mph.It is expected to cross close to Key West,so the Key West High School shelter is filling up. By Sunday evening,it will be a category 1 hurricane, with at least 75 mph winds,as it traverses the Gulf of Mexico.Landfall will be Tuesday evening at a minimum of category 2,with at least 105 mph winds, somewhere between Mississippi and Alabama on the Gulf Coast, according to the latest forecast model.

Kim Delaney:A Mysterious Moment

Actress Kim Delaney had a rough night in her native Philadelphia, speaking at a tribute to former Defense Secretary Robert Gates. The teleprompter with her speech on it didn't work and she tried to improvise. This was deemed inapporpriate as it seemed to bother the audience.
The question is,was she just being creative or had she had too much alcohol,as she has done in the past? Some say she looked disheveled, but isn't that the latest style? When you're dealing with an artist,it's hard to say.
Kim Delaney ended up fascinating the media, but it isn't yet clear how the wider public will react to this episode.
There was no doubt about the stock market this week.It was the worst week since the financial crisis in 2008.The S&P was clipped by 6.54,while the Dow plunged 6.41 and the NASDAQ dove 5.30.
Gold futures caved 101.70,ending at 1637.30 an ounce.Traders were selling commodities off to make up for stock losses.Oil futures declined also, losing 0.66 to close at 79.85 a barrel.
The S&P futures were recovering by Friday evening. They hinted a 6.30 advance at Monday's opening bell.
Australian golfer Adam Scott scored a superb second round 8 under par 65 to earn the lead at the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola,held at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.South Korea's K.J. Choi shot a slightly lesser 7 under par 65 for second position at this final leg of the PGA Playoffs for the FedEx Cup.

Market Has Good Week,Despite Oil

Oil price momentum slowed, but couldn't stop, the market this week.It ended slightly higher for the week. The Dow rose 0.33,while the S&P edged up 0.10 and the NASDAQ 0.13.All bonds ended in the green on Friday as stocks dropped modestly on the day,the fear trade returning in response to continued Libyan chaos on Friday.
Fear carried over into the futures market Friday evening, with the Dow losing another 85.00,the S&P a further 9.40 and the NASDAQ futures falling 12.00 more.
North Dakotans won't have to fear sweating on Saturday, with the forecast high being 16 F at Fargo.
A stiff breeze dried the sweat off golfers at the Honda Classic,a FedEx Cup event, in Palm Beach,Florida on Friday.American Kyle Stanley,23,topped the leader board with a 2nd round 66 for a -6,while South Africans Rory Sabbatini and Charl Schwartzel held 2nd and 3rd place respectively,Sabbatini shooting a superlative 2nd round 64 with 7 birdies and only 1 bogey.
American Mark Wilson leads the FedEx Cup competition so far.

PGA Playoffs Just Ahead

The Wyndham Championship in Greensboro,North Carolina is the last chance for many golfers to qualify for the PGA Playoffs for the FedEx Cup,which begin next Thursday in Paramus,New Jersey.India's Arjun Atwal cannot qualify because a lack of sufficient earnings caused him to lose his PGA card, but he nonetheless shares the lead at the Wyndham with American Brandt Snedeker at -12.Lucus Glover,John Rollins and Kevin Streelman are next at -11.To qualify for the Playoffs, they must rank 125 or better in points from designated tournaments and be PGA members.
The Phiadelphia Phillies bested the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia tonight, winning a pitcher's duel 1-0.It was the 101st consecutive sellout crowd at Citizens.Despite a season pockmarked with injuries, the Phillies persist in contention for a playoff spot, especially as a wild card candidate.
The market fell short this week, ending up in the red for the year so far.Poor manufacturing data from the Mid-Atlantic region and a surprise uptick in jobless claims discouraged stock investors and pumped up the bond trade. Results were mixed in the futures market this evening, with the S&P futures down 1.00 and the Dow futures at -33.0,while the NASDAQ futures scored 5.50 and bonds also rose.
