Paramore Song Climbs Charts;NBA Playoffs

Paramore,active since 2004,is Hayley Williams,vocals;Jeremy Davis,bass;and Taylor York,guitar.Williams,25,changes her hair a lot,but what doesn't change is her feel for the music.This was shown Thursday night on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" on NBC.It wasn't a canned vocal,but she went flat out for her viewers nationwide with "Ain't It Fun" from their latest album "Paramore"(2013).
The song,which was featured several weeks ago in this blog,is currently climbing the charts,to the band's delight.It's a jazzy sort of tune that got up to #21 on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 chart this week,and is #1 on the iTunes Alternatives Charts in the US.
The Paramore song that is featured here today,"Careful," is from their album "brand new eyes" and the video,taking us on a world tour with the band,was posted to YouTube three years ago.It had 11,518,000 views as of Friday afternoon.It's a true rocker,which earns it a lot of credit from this blog.*
The Rolling Stones' "Beast of Burden" was posted to YouTube a year ago.It's got guitar solos by both Ronnie Wood and founding member Keith Richards.The Stones are gearing up for the resumption of their 14 On Fire Tour at the end of May in Western Europe.*

Nothing was quiet about the NBA Playoffs Friday night.Two teams that are hanging on for dear life stayed alive as the Chicago Bulls slipped by the Washington Wizards 100-97,and the Houston Rockets downed the Portland Trailblazers 121-116.James Harden led the Rockets to their crucial win with his 37 points.Both the Bulls and the Rockets are down in the series 2-1,and no team has ever recovered from being down 3-1 in the Playoffs.

Tonight's music is all rock'n'roll,with The Rolling Stones' "Stupid Girl" in a slide show format and "Gimme Shelter" in a live promo video featuring Lisa Fischer.They are performing with Lisa at this writing in "On Fire:Rolling Stones Tour."

Lisa Fischer,55,is an African American singer songwriter who has a solo career,but tours and records widely with other top names in the business as well,including Sting,Tina Turner,Beyonce,Alicia Keyes,Chris Biotti and Nine Inch Nails.Known for her accurate pitch,professionalism and graceful onstage presence,she is one of the most in-demand session and backup singers in the world-and that's fine with her.
Fischer won a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Performance for her hit "How Can I Ease the Pain" and is one of the session and backup singers featured in the noted Morgan Neville documentary "Twenty Feet From Stardom."*
The Houston Rockets made a case for their own stardom Friday night as they crushed the Indiana Pacers 112-86 in Houston,led by James Harden with his 28 points,4 rebounda and 4 assists.The Rockets were spot on with 13 threes for their fourth straight win.Dwight Howard signed autographs before the game,then went on to add his 15 points,7 rebounds and 4 assists to the Houston win.

Houston Dims Golden State;Snowy Jerusalem

The Houston Rockets overpowered the Golden State Warriors 116-112 Friday night at Oracle Arena in Oakland.The fourth period was a closely fought battle after the Wariors had trailed by about 10 points most of the game.In the end,however,the Rockets' powerful combination of James Harden,Chandler Parsons and Dwight Howard was just a bit stronger than the Warriors' top performers David Lee,Harrison Barnes and Stephen Curry.
Dwight Howard said he had been working a lot with the NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwan and Rockets coach Kevin McHale.He contributed 18 points,11 rebounds and 3 assists to the winning effort.James Harden led the Rockets in scoring with his 26 points,2 rebounds and 9 assists.Chandler Parsons added 23 points,1 rebound and 3 assists.
For the Warriors,David Lee topped with 23 points,10 rebounds and 2 blocks.Big man Andrew Bogut impressed with two one-hand jams as the Warriors narrowed the gap and even led briefly late in the game.Warriors star Stephen Curry had an off night with 20 points,2 rebounds and 9 assists.He is 6th in the league in points and assists.*
A vast snowstorm is moving eastward across the United States,buttressed by a stubborn dome of cold air from Canada.It is spanning more than 1,000 miles/1609.3 km.Plowable snow will extend from Missouri east to New Jersey,North to Maine and South to Virginia.
The extent of the snowpack in the US is extraordinary for this date.Last year it covered 30.8% as of 12 December;this year it covers 58.6%.It also goes farther south than normal,reaching all the way to North Texas.This is attributable to the persistent arctic air that has spread so widely.*
Overseas,there has been a rare snowstorm in the Middle East.Jerusalem was in chaos as it faced the worst snow in 50 years,receiving up to 4 inches/10.16 cm.Airports,roads and schools were closed,and the snow even spread into the Egyptian desert just outside Cairo.

Stenson Tops in Dubai,Adam Scott in Melbourne;Knicks Off

The Super Swede,Henrik Stenson,holds the lead at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai,United Arab Emirates after two rounds.Swede,who earlier won the FedEx Cup on the PGA Tour,is now vying for an unprecedented double by also leading in the European Tour's Race To Dubai,its overall season championship.In Round 2 at Dubai,Stenson birdied the eighteenth hole to take sole possession of the lead with his twelve under par 64,one stroke ahead of Spaniard Alejandro Canizares.
The tournament is being played on the Earth Course,one of two courses at Jumeirah Golf Estates,a luxury resort community in the desert just outside Dubai,the city with the world's tallest building.The top three players on the Race To Dubai leaderboard have a chance to take its gold scepter trophy by winning the DP World Tour Championship tournament.Besides Swenson,they are Justin Rose and Graeme McDowell.

The New York Knicks were off Friday after losing to the Houston Rockets 106-103 at Madison Square Garden on Thursday,their eigth staright loss to the Rockets.This was despite Carmelo Anthony's amazing 45 points and 10 rebounds.The Rockets were led by James Harden with his 36 points.Chandler Parsons conributed 22 points,and Jeremy Lin 21,to the Houston victory.
The Knicks are near the bottom of the table with their 3-5 record,but the season is just getting started.

Rockets On Playoffs Track;Valero Texas Open

The Houston Rockets continued their drive to the NBA Playoffs by dominating the Portland Trailblazers Friday night 116-98.The Rockets bumped their record up to 43-33 on the strength of James Harden and Jeremy Lin's play.
Harden scored 33 points with 7 rebounds and 6 assists,and has scored at least 20 points 61 times this season,putting him in pursuit of Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon's record of 67 20-point games in a season.Olajuwon was a 12-time NBA All-Star and MVP in 1994.He also played for the Rockets nearly his entire career,retiring from the Toronto Raptors in 2002.The Nigerian-born,7-foot tall Olajuwon is the all-time leader in blocks;8th in total points scored;and 11th in rebounds.
Jeremy Lin contributed 22 points,4 rebounds and 8 assists to the Rockets' important win.For the Trail Blazers,LaMarcus Aldridge led with 32 points,13 rebounds and 3 assists,while Wesley Matthews notched 18 points,3 rebounds and 4 assists.
Portland is out of playoff contention.
Attending the game at the Rose Garden in Portland,Oregon were 20,400 fans.
At the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio,American Billy Horschel topped the leader board after the second round Friday at eight under par.Horschel,26,came in second at last week's Shell Houston Open and has made 9 of 10 cuts this season.He turned pro in 2009.
Former world number one Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland was still in contention Friday at five under par.
The Izod IndyCar Series moves to the Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds,Alabama for the Honda Grand Prix of Alabama on Sunday.The NBC Sports channel will carry the race live at 3pm Eastern.

Magic Still Winning;Wintry East

The Orlando Magic extended their winning streak to eight games Friday night,handing the Houston Rockets a 110-95 defeat at Amway Center in Orlando,the arena that was a blue box glowing in a reddish crisscross of streets.Brandon Bass and Jason Richardson led the Magic with 18 points each,while Dwight Howard contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds and Brian Anderson shot 16 from the bench-a true team effort.
Kevin Martin led the Rockets with 27 points.Houston continues to suffer from the loss of big man Yao Ming,whose tragic career may be coming to an end after a second season of serious injuries.
Motorists lost time in New York state as snow caused accidents across the Hudson Valley,while New Jerseyans praised their road crews for doing a better job of handling the wintry conditions this time around.Light snow will brush the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions on Saturday,and Winter Storm Watches are posted from Alabama to South Carolina with the potential for ice storms in the area.
Wall Street was unimpressed by the potential for job growth,disappointed in the slow pace of additions to the work force in December.Stocks were down slightly on Friday,and the S&P futures fell 2.40 in the evening,while Treasury futures rose in price.

More Snow For Sierra Nevada,Charlotte Bobcats Warm

The Sierra Nevada range is looking for more snow this weekend.Up to a foot more will add to the several feet of snow pack already received recently.Snow will also sweep across Idaho and into Western Montana and Northwestern Wyoming,while the Great Lakes will register up to a foot of lake effect snow.
The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic were mainly clear and cold Friday night,with the lowest nighttime temperatures of the season expected in some areas.
The Charlotte Bobcats were warmed up Friday night by their 99-89 victory over the Houston Rockets,who were playing without their legendary big man,Yao Ming.Yao is injured and will probably be out for at least a few more weeks.
Chase Budinger led the Rockets with 19 points and 18 rebounds;the Bobcats were carried by Gerald Wallace with his 21 points and 14 rebounds,as well as Boris Diaw and his 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bobcats,6-10,shucked a 2-game losing streak,but the Rockets,4-11,have dropped 5 of the last 6 now.
The market was mixed this week as it fretted over European debt and Korean tension,while feeling more confident in consumer spending.The Dow fell 111.55 for the week,and the S&P stumbled 10.33.The tech-rich NASDAQ climbed 16.44.
The stock futures were uniformly negative Friday evening,given the geopolitical uncertainty,with substantial drops in all three index futures,and bond futures responded with a move upward.
