Charli XCX Rocks Today;Porter Wagoner's Life;Penn State Volleyball

Charli XCX appeared on the Today Show's Concert Series Wedenesday morning. She and her all-girl band performed her hit "Break The Rules,"which was posted in this blog last week.Charli was up to the challenge of performing before 9 a.m.Her dance moves were frenetic as ever at that early hour.A small number of fans watched her indoor performance in the studio, while several hundred others watched on screens outdoors.*
I've never really had a five-year plan,Charli said. It's just sort of waiting to see what happens.
The new album "Sucker" is kind of more raw, more wild than anything I've ever had before. It's kind of a punk feel, more guitar-led.I was working at Westlake Studios in Los Angeles when I wrote "Break The Rules."I wrote it in the parking lot on my phone.I can't wait for everyone to hear my new album.*
Porter Wagoner was a native of West Plains,Missouri. He began his career while working as a meat cutter in his hometown. On the side,he started a band called The Blue Ridge Boys, which played on the local radio stations.RCA Victor eventually signed him to a contract.
His TV career started in 1955 on ABC-TV with the show "Ozark Jubilee."In 1957,he joined the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. He toured the rural towns extensively, playing outdoors at their American Legion posts, typically performing on makeshift stages while the audience sat on wooden benches.Every one of his eighty-one records reached the charts.
Wagoner began his iconic "Porter Wagoner Show" in 1960,and it ran for an incredible 21 years, drawing up to three million viewers, including my own father and myself.Bear in mind that America had a much smaller population in those days.He hired Dolly Parton,a native of the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee,to be his duet partner in 1967.She had literally been born and raised in a log cabin. They recorded several hits together, including "Someone I Used To Know,"which is posted in this blog.Wagoner and Parton, both of whom were already married, stayed together until 1974,when Parton broke away to have a solo career. This caused a breach in their relationship, but they reconciled in the late 1980s,performing together several more times until Wagoner died of lung cancer in 2007 at the age of 80.
Wagoner was married twice and was the father of three.Parton has been married to the same man,Carl Dean, for nearly 50 years. She turns 69 in January and has sold more than 100 million recordings and downloads.*

Houston Dims Golden State;Snowy Jerusalem

The Houston Rockets overpowered the Golden State Warriors 116-112 Friday night at Oracle Arena in Oakland. The fourth period was a closely fought battle after the Wariors had trailed by about 10 points most of the game.In the end, however, the Rockets' powerful combination of James Harden,Chandler Parsons and Dwight Howard was just a bit stronger than the Warriors' top performers David Lee,Harrison Barnes and Stephen Curry.
Dwight Howard said he had been working a lot with the NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwan and Rockets coach Kevin McHale. He contributed 18 points,11 rebounds and 3 assists to the winning effort.James Harden led the Rockets in scoring with his 26 points,2 rebounds and 9 assists.Chandler Parsons added 23 points,1 rebound and 3 assists.
For the Warriors,David Lee topped with 23 points,10 rebounds and 2 blocks.Big man Andrew Bogut impressed with two one-hand jams as the Warriors narrowed the gap and even led briefly late in the game.Warriors star Stephen Curry had an off night with 20 points,2 rebounds and 9 assists. He is 6th in the league in points and assists.*
A vast snowstorm is moving eastward across the United States, buttressed by a stubborn dome of cold air from Canada. It is spanning more than 1,000 miles/1609.3 km.Plowable snow will extend from Missouri east to New Jersey,North to Maine and South to Virginia.
The extent of the snowpack in the US is extraordinary for this date.Last year it covered 30.8% as of 12 December;this year it covers 58.6%.It also goes farther south than normal, reaching all the way to North Texas. This is attributable to the persistent arctic air that has spread so widely.*
Overseas, there has been a rare snowstorm in the Middle East.Jerusalem was in chaos as it faced the worst snow in 50 years, receiving up to 4 inches/10.16 cm.Airports, roads and schools were closed, and the snow even spread into the Egyptian desert just outside Cairo.
